Is there any better food in the world than a good fresh guacamole? Because if that exists … I need to know it already!
As a Mexican, guacamole has always been one of my favorite foods and I love how these seemingly simple ingredients come together and create something incredibly delicious, refreshing and healthy. The recipe of the day is quite special for me because it reminds me of the flavors of home, even though I live far away. The guacamole can be eaten as an appetizer, it can be used as a salad or to accompany dishes and cuts of meat.
But first, the TOP 10 of fun facts about guacamole and avocados.
1- It was created for the first time by the Aztecs, in southern central Mexico.
2- The word guacamole comes from the Aztec phrase ‘ahuaca-mulli’, which means ‘avocado sauce’.
3- Avocados are really a fruit and not a vegetable, as many people think.
4- They have a high fat content, but this is a “good” fat: monounsaturated fat.
5- An entire avocado contains 200-300 calories and is a good source of vitamin A, C, E, K and B vitamins, as well as fiber, protein and potassium.
6- National Guacamole Day is celebrated on Mexican Independence Day, September 16.
7- On September 3, 2017, 815 gastronomy students set the world record in Michoacán, Mexico, for the largest portion of guacamole, weighing 2,670 kilograms.
8- In addition to its use in modern Mexican cuisine, it has become part of international cuisine as an ingredient in salsa, seasoning and salad.
9- Do not just think of avocados as a tasty addition to sandwiches and salads, Brazilians actually add avocados to ice cream.
10- Avocados are poisonous for birds, cats, dogs, rabbits and, basically, all pets, so do not share them with your little friends.
Today I want to share with you my version of the delicious guacamole as it is prepared in Mexico, it is so easy to make that you’ll be surprised. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you should enjoy it, so if you do not like any of the ingredients, you can adjust the recipe to suit your palate. Just remember that the use of avocados is not in dispute!
4 large Hass avocados (black, slightly soft when pressed)
2 large limes or lemons
1 medium red onion (cubed)
1/2 cup fresh cilantro packed loosely (finely chopped)
1 large tomato (cut into cubes, make sure it is not too ripe)
Salt, pepper and garlic powder
Fresh jalapeño finely chopped or any other pepper of your choice. (optional)
1- Cut the avocados in half. Discard the seed. Remove the avocado with a spoon. Place in a bowl.
2- Add the juice of a fresh lime immediately to prevent the avocado from darkening. Use a fork and mash to the desired consistency.
3- Add the chopped onions, tomato and cilantro. Stir gently to mix but avoid crushing the ingredients.
4- Add the juice of the second lime. Stir slightly, until it is incorporated.
5- Add salt, pepper and garlic to your liking
6- Add jalapeño or any pepper to give it more flavor if you do not like spicy food ignore this step.
7- Serve with your tortillas or toast, or use them as an accompaniment to your favorite dish.
Note: this is to make a thick, but creamy guacamole. Some people prefer to use a food processor with all the ingredients to make a much creamier mix.
